Dear parent/guardian,

Welcome to Physical Science! I am very excited to have your student in my class this year. This course will be very technology intensive to help better prepare students for the kinds of skills they need in the 21st Century.  Developing 21st Century Skills now will help students become confident as they continue through their high school years and ultimately into higher education and/or careers. This letter contains information regarding the main forms of technology we will be using this school year.

Schoology
Our classroom website will be hosted through a learning management system (LMS) called Schoology. This system has many features that will allow students to take charge of their own learning. A few key features include:

·         Students can collaborate from home via the message board
·         Students have access to ALL course materials 24 hours a day no matter where they are via the internet or the Schoology mobile app on their smart phones
·         Students can check due dates any time and connect their email/smartphone/other digital calendar device directly to Schoology so they will know immediately if dates change
·         Student can connect their Google Drive accounts directly making turning in assignments simple, and eliminating the need for Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.

Once your student signs up for the course, you can receive a parent access code. This will allow you “view-only” access. This will allow you to remain up-to-date on everything your student is doing in class. Directions for registering for a parent account can be found below. *Please note that this access code is unique to your student. Do not use an access code from another parent/student. Email me at jamie.jobe@fhsdschools.org to receive your access code.

To register for a parent account, please follow these steps:
1.      Navigate to www.schoology.com. The home page should appear something like this:
Macintosh HD:Users:cwoodman28:Desktop:Schoology Login.tiff

2.      Click the “Sign up” button in the top right corner, then click “Parent”

Schooltube and Youtube
I have flipped my physical science classroom. Instead of using class time to lecture, students are responsible for watching an instructional video at home to free up class time for discussions, deeper learning, and individual assistance.  Students can use the videos to learn at their own pace—any time or place. Students can replay my explanation of a new concept as many times as needed without fear of holding up the rest of the class. To do this, I will be posting short instructional videos weekly or bi-weekly on two different sites. Students can create a login for SchoolTube at www.schooltube.com or view my YouTube page at https://www.youtube.com/user/jobeFHHS

Watching these videos will be a required component of my course. Due dates will be assigned for specific videos and regular quizzes/collection of notes will occur to assess student progress.
Remind
Remind is an application that allows me to send text or email updates in a one-way manner to students and parents. The program keeps phone numbers hidden so that parties cannot see each other's numbers. If you choose to opt in you will receive text alerts or emails about due dates for homework assignments, upcoming test/important date reminders, and general kudos to classes. I will not receive any reply to these messages. If you have a question or concern about a message, please email me directly. Below are instructions to opt in to either text alerts or emails notifications.

To receive messages via email, send an email to psjo@mail.remind.com

To receive messages via text, text @psjo to (573)202-6992

Twitter
From time to time I will post updates, class news, or supplemental resources on my twitter account. This is another way that I can stay connected with students and share current, class-relevant news with students. You can follow me on twitter: @JobeFHHS.

Additional apps on Smart Phones

Students will be asked to download a few FREE apps to assist in learning. Below are few apps that we will be using along with a brief description of their use. Students will not be penalized for opting out of using these programs or not having access to a smart phone.

Schoology: This application will link students to our classroom in schoology. This will allow them to access materials, view the class calendar, and participate in discussions without being in front of a computer or tablet.

This eliminates the need to turn in paper copies of assignments, allows students to turn in homework at any time throughout the day, and allows me to keep an electronic copy of all assignments.

Mastery Connect: Mastery Connect is our district’s online assessment tool. This app allows students to take an assessment through their phone and instantly receive feedback.

http://voicethread.com/media/custom/mobile/app_icon.pngVoicethread: VoiceThread is a web-based platform that enables teachers and students to upload images, video, or documents, record audio, video, or text comments, and then invite others to record comments as well. This application will allow for students to collaborate outside of the classroom walls.

Thank you for your dedication to student success!
